ECON0047: The Economics of Labour
Group Coursework Project

Word limit: 1500 words (excluding figures, tables, or bibliography).

Submission deadline: 9am on April 24 (Monday), 2023

Answer ONE question only.

1. Consider the following statement: “Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will
likely increase wage inequality.” Discuss and evaluate, using the concepts we have learned in
this module as well as drawing on the literature on technology and labour.

2. In an effort to promote intergenerational social mobility, many US universities are
considering removing SAT* scores from their admissions criteria, which typically include the
applicant’s high school GPA, SAT score, and personal statement. Do you think the policy will
be effective in achieving its intended objective? Discuss and evaluate, using the concepts we
have learned in this module as well as drawing on the literature on inequality and
intergenerational mobility. [*The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the US.]
