, Overall Objectives for the ICU
• Understand the prevalence and management of long-term conditions and cancer
• Develop understanding from different perspectives about how illnesses may evolve, including acute episodes and
chronic phases, from diagnosis to end of life
• Develop and demonstrate further communication skills in consulting with patients, by applying and developing an
integrated bio-psychosocial assessment with clinical problem solving
• Develop approaches to difficult communication challenges, such as breaking bad news and discussing risk with
patients
• Develop understanding of how multidisciplinary and multi-professional teams work together to deliver care in the
NHS
• Develop an understanding of how clinical information systems support long-term condition management
• Are able to identify and use reference resources for prescribing
• Outline the principles of cancer care
- Patient journeys before, during and after an episode of cancer
- How cancer is diagnosed,
- Management, treatment and patient support in cancer care
- Evaluate patients presenting with acute oncological problems, and describe the management of these oncological
emergencies
• The role of multi-professional teams and the charity sector in cancer care
• Understand long-term conditions

- How common long-term conditions present, are diagnosed, assessed and managed, through exacerbation and

primary and secondary care
