Face : An area in front of the fore head and chin. Cosmetic : It’s a product in the area to change appearance of the skin especially the face without interfering with metabolism. Metabolism : It’s continuous series of chemical changes in the living body which life is maintained. Cosmetology : It’s the study of hair and beauty Cosmetologist : Is a person that has knowledge of hair and beauty products and services. Client: Is a person who visits a salon to acquire or purchase in exchange of salon services Why clients visit a salon  To look good, nice & smart  To seek knowledge from the beautician.  To give themselves a self-treat  To rest at a pleasant atmosphere  To relax or be comfortable  To benefit from the professionals. Types of clients Regular client : It’s a person who visits a salon after a short period of time. Occasional client : It’s a person who visits a salon after long period of time. New client : It’s a person who visits a salon for the first time. NB: All clients in salon be treated in the same way because they are important and they must be attended all. What attracts clients in a salon?  Acceptance of all salon e.g general outlook, clean & neatness  Kind of advertisements e.g magazines, radio, TV etc.  The word of mouth e.g client recommending others  Services offered e.g professionalism & client care  Appearance of the therapist Career opportunities for studying beauty therapy There are many valid career opportunities in beauty therapy 1. Receptionist 2. Salon owner 3. A consultant 4. Sales & marketing representative 5. Beautician in a salon 6. A teacher in training institution 7. A make-up artist in radios, TV etc. 8. Demonstrator in manufacturing companies 9. A freelance artist (beauty) 10. Writer SALON, HEALTH AND SAFETY - A beautician must be clean outward and should clean & sterilize his/her tools. - A beautician should know where emergency kits are. - The salon must have dustbins - Each client should use his/her own towel. - Clean the working surface regularly with clean dis-infectant & water. - Client with infectious diseases should not be attended in the salon & therefore should be advised to seek medical attention. - Used tools should be cleaned and sterilized after use. Beauticians should know the following - Know where emergency exits are & in case of fire know the type of gas that you will use. - Know how to use a telephone for emergency cases e.g fire brigade & ambulance services. - Know how to use electrical equipment’s safely - Have knowledge on emergency first aid kit Sanitation & Sterilization Sanitation : It’s the application on measures to promote public health & spreading of infectious diseases Sterilization : It’s complete destruction of all living things in an object by use of electric current. Dis-infectant : It’s the use of liquid chemical to kill some germs. Consultation : It’s the asking or talking to client before carrying out any kind of service regarding beauty. Analysing : It’s observing/examining the skin of the client without asking questions before doing any service Importance of consultation
