Geography A-level Paper 2 - Regeneration EQ1 What is place and space? - ANS Space - physical location and distribution of geographical features. Space - a place that's shaped by individuals and communities over time, given meaning by people. Places are on the rural-urban continuum, not a simple divide between rural and urban. Why are places different? - ANS There are different processes (locally, nationally, globally) e.g containerisation in Tower Hamlets. Processes include migration, capital, information and resources, making some areas economically dynamic, others marginalised, exacerbating social and economic inequalities. What do regeneration programmes involve? - ANS A range of players with regeneration and rebranding (marketing). They impact variably on people, both lived experiences of change and perception of place. Relative success of regeneration for individuals/groups depends on the extent of lived experiences, perception/attachment. Define regeneration - ANS Positively transforming a place that has usually shown decline, it means the long-term upgrading of places, improving the area's economy. Define rebranding - ANS Developing a place to re-position its image and changing people's perception of it. The area's identity is enhanced.
