The role and value of the Life Orientation in the Holistic development of senior phase
learners
Introduction
It is my view that life Orientation teachers do have an important role and value in the Holistic
development of senior phase learners in the South African context. According to the CAPS
document, the holistic approach is developing the students personally, socially, intellectually,
emotional, spiritual and physical. The Curriculum has been developed and should be taught
in such away that learners later become productive members of society and have an improved
quality of life. Education is the key to success. (Deventer, 2009)
South African students have a lot of issues and stresses to deal with. Life Orientation can help
students deal with better Sexual health decisions such as safe sex or abstinence. When
Students are educated in the is area, they can protect themselves which could lead to less teen
pregnancies and less infection. With South African high aids figures and the psychological
affects of children who are now orphaned. Life Orientation can help mitigate the need for
counselling and support. It is of my opinion that LO teachers plan an important role in
dealing with the effects of HIV and aids and also the impact it has on the child’s education
and society as a whole. Even though Aids is curable, but it still has negative economic effects
on society. Life Orientation can be seen as a preventive education framework that can help
society in the long run. Life Orientation teachers can educate students on the consequences of
teen pregnancies, and this will hopefully deter them from this behaviour. (M.D. Magano, 17
Oct 2017).
My personal reflection, I can see that society has been devastated by HIV and Aids. As a
teacher that has studied psychology. I see the usefulness of life orientation and a psychology
trained teacher in the classroom. They can offer counselling, insight and life experience to the
students. Some teachers are not fully trained in all psychological methods and
psychodynamics. However, they should have enough training and understanding to offer
person centred counselling or support in the classroom and outside. Most of the students will
need some type of advice or emotional support during their school life. Life Orientation
teachers will be their first point of contact during crises and decisions. (Nonzukiso Tyilo,
2020).
