PURPOSE
The primary purpose of this exercise is to help you master the process of identifying
metamorphicrocks. The secondary purpose of this exercise is to help you understand the
relationships between textures, types, and grades of metamorphism.
Metamorphic Rock ldentification
Use your lab manual to determine the texture, mineralogical composition, name, type of
metamorphism, grade of metamorphism, and protolith for each metamorphic rock listed on the
following page. Metamorphic rock sets are essentially identical, but you should look at another
set after you have completed yours. Youare responsible for learning only the metamorphic rocks
numbered in the chart on the next page.
