Exercise keeps a person healthy by strengthening and flexing muscles, tendons and ligaments, increasing bone density, and improving respiratory and cardiovascular output. The crucial step that many people overlook is how their nutrition can impact their exercise. The quality and duration of a workout can be affected by what the person does or doesn’t eat before, during and after a workout. The food that a person uses to fuel up for a workout directly impacts the quality and duration of that work out. Ideally, a person should start to fuel up about two hours before starting the workout. This allows ample time for the food to digest and the nutrients become available to the muscles for use. Healthy carbohydrates are the best foods to eat before a workout to ensure that glucose levels are high enough to sustain the workout. Whole grain cereal or toast, yogurt, whole grain pasta, fruit and vegetables are ideal to build up enough of a nutrient reserve. It is important to avoid saturated fats and even healthy meats during this period because of the energy and time needed to digest them. It takes longer than the two hours before the workout for the food to process through the digestive system. This will take away from the blood supply
