GEOSCI 100 General Geology - UW-Madison Geosci 100 Lab: The Climate System.
UW-Madison Geosci 100 Lab: The Climate System This lab differs from our normal routine, as most of the questions will be directly addressed in class. 1. What is the hottest year on record, as indic ated by instrumental (thermometer) data? 2. (a) Where on the globe is the temperature increasing most dramatically? (b) And why is it increasing most dramatically there? 3. The energy that drives our climate system ultimately comes from the sun. This sunlight is dominantly in the “visible” wavelength (we can see it!). Is this “visible“ energy more or less energetic than “x-ray energy”? 4. After the Earth absorbs this “visible” light, it transforms the “visible” energy to another wavelength (or color of light). What is the dominant wavelength of this energy that the Earth radiates? 5. What are the three most important greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere? 6. Why does the greenhouse effect happen? 7. What are the two types of circulation that redistribute the absorbed solar energy, moving it from the equator to the poles?
