 MIS 605 Week 7 DQ 1 Describe how complex a query can get, by locating an example of a complex AdventureWorks query online. Post a link to the example in the Main Forum. Include an explanation of what the data are telling you. Comment on the accuracy and interpretation of the posts and data listed by two of your peers. A query becomes complex when we have derived the need to combine various forms of data from multiple tables for a specific outcome. Even more complex, when we haven’t determined an outcome the end user needs. In this case, we’re simply throwing darts to receive data, verify what is needed or not, and interpreting what the data means, (is it information?). My initial task in responding to this DQ was to define a “Complex query”. Complex queries use “complex joins and sub-queries.” Standard queries use SELECT and WHERE commands, whereas, a complex query expands the standard to, “…perform more accurate searches of a database.” The complex query embeds “…joins and sub-queries in the WHERE clause” within parenthesis and “…involve heavy use of AND and OR clauses.” Basically, complex queries are SQL commands meant to narrow search results from large databases. This query determines if a sub-component “exists” for a product. The query, (3/4 down), identifies what I need to produce a product. From last week’s DQ, I created a production lag scenario. I determined that I needed to run a query to identify the timing and what is needed to build a product ordered by a customer. Identifying the sub-components needed to build a product allows me to manage, in part, availability to produce immediately and that which can wait, (back order). SELECT P.ProductID, P.Name, P.ProductNumber, P.FinishedGoodsFlag, P.ListPrice FROM Production.Product P WHERE P.SellEndDate is NULL AND p.DiscontinuedDate is NULL AND EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM Production.BillOfMaterials BOM WHERE P.ProductID = BOM.ComponentID) • • • • Page 7-8, • • • • • • • Use ^ for diagram • • • • • Use ^ for diagram – ¾ of the way down.
