Project Portfolio Final Chamberlain College of Nursing NR632: Nurse Executive Concluding Graduate Experience NR632 PORTFOLIO 2023 PROJECT PORTFOLIO FINAL 2 PICOT Will nursing supervisors for a new facility be able to implement new documents along with a new process and be held accountable at the daily Flash meetings within the next 16 weeks? This is a new facility start up, with Nursing Supervisors who do not have the appropriate documents and processes in place. The scope of the issue is the Nursing Supervisors do not have experience in a new start up and need leadership and support from another Nursing Supervisor from a sister facility. No current change is needed, just a foundation where they are able to be educated and be successful in their new positions. Abstract This project is based on a new facility start up with Nursing Supervisors who were in need of appropriate documents and processes in order to succeed. The Nursing Supervisors did not have experience in a new start up and needed leadership and support from another Nursing Supervisor from a sister facility. Starting a new facility requires leadership that is willing to communicate appropriately with their staff to be guided into success. The process of opening a facility was challenging and entailed a multidisciplinary group of individuals to be able to achieve this. Balancing production efficiency and safety, creating and maintaining trust, actively managing the process of change, involving staff in decision making pertaining to work flow, and using knowledge management practices to launch the facility in an effective way are essential to keeping patients safe and staff effective in their roles. The project manager and facility’s CNO encouraged the Nursing Supervisors to have a leadership approach with their staff. The aspiration was to achieve a collective goal rather than multiple individual goals. Trusting the nursing supervisors ability to assess patient needs and their appropriate care gives them a sense of autonomy and encourages them to share that trust with their leaders; however, this can only be attainable by providing them with the appropriate documents and processes to follow. The project’s objectives were to develop & implement nursing supervisor tools using EBP to capture & communicate information between shifts & evaluate communication improvement through daily Flash meetings PROJECT PORTFOLIO FINAL 3 with the supervisors, CNO, CEO, Director of Admissions, and Risk Manager for feedback. Create a nursing supervisor guide to improve communication efficiency between shifts using clearly defined processes, guidelines, and documents, which would be reviewed by the CNO prior to implementation. Apply professional values of the Human Science of Caring by Jean Watson when addressing cultural diversity & learning styles when preparing & presenting the final project by meeting with CNO of facility twice weekly & discuss challenges, needs, & ways for improvement. And create audits, checklists, and supervisor report sheets for the Nursing supervisors, these forms will be placed in a binder and will also be added to a shared drive once the documents are reviewed and approved by the CNO prior to implementation. The objectives were achieved by effective leadership skills like researching and utilizing EBP and effective communication, as well as through the use of the tools provided by this class. Literature Review: New Facility Start Up The start up of a new hospital is complicated and requires numerous hours of education, leadership, support and implementation. A start up process involves new policies and procedures, implementation of new documents, education and training, along with support and leadership to make the entire process successful. There are numerous examples of hospital startups that were unpractical or inadequately planned and have caused a hospital to be incompletely constructed and discarded or terminated within a few years due to unprofitability (Smigelski, 2015). Nursing Supervisors need to attend leadership training in order to be advocates and make a positive impact on patient outcomes. The significance of nursing supervisors is needed to empower and influence nurses’ confidence in order to restore nurses’ confidence and inspire them to embrace and initiate the adjustments needed (Lancaster, D’Leema, Narcavage-Bradley, Sollazzo, & Esposito, 2016). Current Evidence-Based Literature There are many communities in critical need of a mental health facility. The problem we continue to see is that people are not seeking or receiving help because they lack the knowledge necessary and the resources to PROJECT PORTFOLIO FINAL 4 obtain it. In the United States around 60% of Americans are undiagnosed, which means they never seek mental health treatment (Gaussen, 2018). Research shows that hospital startups benefit from concentrating on either behavioral or mental disorders, rather than trying to focus on both at once (Gaussen, 2018). Palm Point Behavioral Health offers specific treatment for those struggling with behavioral health problems. The goal is to reach the community by having a child and adolescent unit, as well as adult units, and a mobile team that will supply the community with no-cost assessments. The hospital will be running under Universal Health Services, Inc., which was identified as one of the world’s most admired companies in 2018 (Hilado & Crawford, 2018). Opening this facility will prove to be a vital asset to the community of Titusville because of the mission and goals set by administration and followed by the staff through effective leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Effective leadership in today's health care atmosphere entails passionate intellect. Fresher nursing examples accentuate the significance of affiliations, open communication, and reciprocated understanding. Most complaints about health care practitioners relate to poor communication, not clinical competence, and improving communication in health care is a current area of interest in nursing policy and practice (Lancaster, D’Leema, Narcavage-Bradley, Sollazzo, & Esposito, 2016). Nurses need to increase their emotional intellect and advance their ability to identify, understand, and reply beneficially to the feelings of their patients and themselves. Three key factors that can function as a guide in improving mental health services are ethics, evidence and experience. Starting with a statement of the principle
