Essential Cell Biology: Chapter Questions and Answers 2023
Membrane-Enclosed Organelles - -one of several compartments with a specialized function, suspended in the cytoplasm and found in eukaryotic cells -Endomembrane System - -A network of membranes inside and around a eukaryotic cell, related either through direct physical contact or by the transfer of membranous vesicles. -Signal Sequence - -A short sequence of amino aids, usually found at the N-terminus of a protein being translated, that directs the ribosome and its associated mRNa to the membranes of the rough ER where trasnlation will be completed. Signal sequences are found on membrane-boudn proteins, secreted proteins, and proteins destined for other organelles. -Nuclear Envelope - -Double membrane perforated with pores that control the flow of materials in and out of the nucleus. -Nuclear Pores - -holes in the nuclear envelope that allow materials to pass in and out of the nucleus -Rough ER - -A network of interconnected membranous sacs in a eukaryotic cell's cytoplasm; covered with ribosomes that make membrane proteins and secretory proteins.
