Risk Assessment and Safety Planning MFT 5103- Systemic Evaluation and Case Management Week 3 Assignment Purpose of a Risk Assessment • By implementing appropriate management measures, the risk assessment process identifies hazards, removes them when required, or reduces the degree of risk they pose. You've made the workplace safer and healthier by doing this. • The family therapy context includes risk assessment for both children and adults, which can be completed by anyone who is experiencing emotional distress and is concerned about their safety. • The risk of future acts of violence must be assessed. In many fields of law and clinical practice, such choices are required by law, professional ethics, or common law. By doing so, we can identify families whose kids are at greater risk of mental illness due to psychosocial risk factors. Types of Risks • Child abuse • Domestic Abuse • Suicide • Elderly Abuse Cultural Variances in risk assessment •Communication styles: Communication styles vary from culture to culture, which impacts how information is given and understood. Some cultures can communicate more directly, while others may communicate more indirectly. Information should be presented and discussed on these distinctions to be aware of them. •Belief System: The belief systems of individuals can influence how they perceive and react to danger, making them relevant to the risk assessment process. For example, certain cultures may view risk more fatalistically and as a result, may be less willing to take preventative measures to reduce the severity of the risk. Understanding and considering these distinctions is essential when conducting a risk assessment. •Values- A person's values can influence their perception of risk and how they react to it. A culture that places a high value on personal autonomy may be less likely to accept procedures they perceive as intrusive. Those cultures may have a more challenging time accepting medical advances because of this. Understanding these distinctions and considering them is essential when doing a risk assessment. •Social Norms- Social norms can also influence a person's perception of risks and reactions. A culture may tolerate risk-taking behavior better and may not act in situations they perceive as harmful, for instance. There may also be higher literacy rates in some countries. Taking these distinctions into account is essential when conducting a risk assessment. •Family Dynamics- Family dynamics can also influence people's perceptions of danger and reactions to it. In some families, the structure may be more set in stone, and family members may be less hesitant to accept changes that they view as potentially dangerous. These distinctions must be understood and considered when doing a risk assessment.
