QUESTION 1

Write short notes on each of the following philosophies’ views on education:

Empiricism

Empiricism simply means ‘experience-ism’. According to the philosophy of
Empiricism, everything we know is based on what we have experienced personally
through our five senses (seeing, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling). As you can
see, Empiricism is a very practical philosophy. It isn’t concerned with things we can’t
know or prove.

Empiricism insists that teaching and learning can only occur in those subjects that
provide humankind with ‘real knowledge’. These subjects are mathematics, the
sciences (biology, physics, chemistry) and engineering (which is applied science).

Empiricism is the view that all ideas come from experience that all ideas may be
applicable or are about things that can be experienced, or that all reasonably
acceptable prepositions and beliefs are known or justified primarily through
experience. Empiricism explains the primary role of experience. Empiricism insists
that all knowledge is the basis of experience. Besides, the empirical theory of
thought or meaning holds on to the derivation of the meaning of concepts and our
words from experience (Alston). Although giving a clear meaning of experience is
very difficult, the experience can be different from aesthetic, religious, moral, and
sensory. The concentration of empiricists is mostly on experience sense,
consciousness modes resulting from the excitement of the five senses (Alston).
However, experience is not a source of all the knowledge. There is an assumption in
empiricism whereby higher levels are on the lower levels and lowest level issues
directly from experience.

What can empiricism help us to achieve in education?

 To think more clearly and critically
 To be precise in what we mean
 To identify false statements
 To see how our physical world operates
 To test the truth of certain claims
 To learn from experience
