Question 1
Study Activity 1.3 on page 9 and the feedback to this activity on page 10 of your
Tutorial Letter 501. This activity illustrates an incident of communication breakdown
because of how language has been used.
Think of an incident from your own experience in which the use of language led to
some communication breakdown. Explain the incident to show how language use
contributed to the breakdown you have identified. In your response make clear which
aspect of language led to poor communication e.g. pronunciation, vocabulary,
syntax, semantics etc. (see page 8-9 in Tutorial Letter 501).
N.B. your response should not exceed half a page.
To respond to this question, you have to study and understand the
grammatical aspects of the English language system (Language as
system, page 8-9, TUT 501).
Have you ever been in a position where the use of language led to
communication breakdown? Write down what you experienced
during the Communication breakdown.
Was the communication breakdown because of the speech sound,
syntax, and pragmatics?
You can either narrate the story or use a dialogue to answer the
question. If you use a dialogue, explain in a few sentences the
