Clinical Question
Problem Description
We live in a time where nursing demands are high and problematic. In addition, we are
trying to recover with a pandemic that cost a lot of lives, including our health care workers.
According to an analysis of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the nation’s nursing homes
has shed about 235,000 jobs since March of 2020 and that is roughly about 15 percent of the
nursing staff gone (Pauline, 2022). Even before the pandemic happened, nursing staff demand in
nursing homes are high in demand. In fact, only 10% to 15% of staff in the nursing homes are
nurses (Kolanowski et al., 2021). This is concerning due the rapid growth of population of older
adults (Pauline, 2022).
Problem Significance
Nurses plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety. Adequate nurse-to-patient ratio can
less likely produced an overworked and burnout nurse, errors, and interruptions (Patient Safety
Network, n.d.). Interruptions and errors increase the risks of errors that can lead to the nursing
staff to be criminally prosecuted and put the patient’s well-being in danger, especially since our
older adult’s population health are fragile. This will most likely happen if there are not enough
nursing staff to take care of our elderly (Patient Safety Network, n.d.). U.S. nursing homes
requires to have sufficient nursing staff with proper capability to ensure that residents are safe
and maintain the highest possible practice of care physically, mentally, and psychosocially for the
residents of the nursing home (Harrington, et al., 2020). Inadequate nurse staff does not promote
a culture of safety for residents and staff (Wofford, n.d.). If anything, it promotes many risks and
room for errors and interruptions that can caused a nurse’s license.
