Week 10 Class Response 10
This is the final lecture which about consumerism and symbolic meaning of
consumption. When I am watching the first four videos, I think they are funny
especially for the women who over consumption. However, when I reflected my life,
it might have similarity. I do not have a room that contain lots of toilet paper, but I do
have a corner that is full of boutique which are tiny, cute, and pink. I am within the
consumerism because when I purchase them, they are out of my want.
I like to purchase something fancy when I think about my consumption behavior.
The definition of useful value and exchange value of commodities are inspired for my
consumptions. Recently, I had brought two phone case of my favorite singer from
Casetify. They are cost 60USD per one. It is a Hong Kong based brand that producing
expensive phone case with high quality and amazing design. It reminds me the
symbolic violence. When I am using the phone case, I feel like my phone is more
worth than others. However, It is just a phone case with high quality. It does not
acquire that much of amount of money that only made by plastic.
Even is a phone case, capitalism and symbolic violence being anywhere because
we want to differentiate ourselves. When I am using the phone case created by the
famous singer in Hong Kong and using a Hong Kong based phone case company, I
feel proud. It shows that difference that I am a Hong Konger, and I am one of the fans.
Most importantly, it shows I can afford the price of the good.
The class is finally ended. I felt so stressful when I could not understand the
contact or The sprinkling point when I am knowing something about how the world is
working. I am glad to have these classes as they refreshing how I see the world and
how the world is. Thank you, Ken, for delivering the lecture. Although they are hard
for me as a beginner, I am enjoyable.
