Question 1 1.1 Literature is any collection of written work, but it is also used more narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art form, especially prose fiction, drama, and poetry. In recent centuries, the definition has expanded to include oral literature, much of which has been transcribed. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. Literature allows a person to step back in time and learn about life on Earth from the ones who walked before us. We can gather a better understanding of culture and have a greater appreciation of them. We learn through the ways history is recorded, in the forms of manuscripts and through speech itself. Multicultural literature can be used as a tool to open students' minds. It helps to stimulate an understanding of diversity in the classroom and helps to build an understanding of and respect for people from other cultures. Also, multicultural literature can be used to examine racism. Pluralism allows all groups to retain elements of their cultural backgrounds and belief systems within a more dominant culture. This philosophy promotes an attitude of acceptance and respect for one another's beliefs and opinions. At its best, multicultural children's literature helps children understand that despite our many differences, all people share common feelings and aspirations. Those feelings can include love, sadness, fear and the desire for fairness and justice. 1.2 In the landscape of literature, there are four major genres: poetry, drama, fiction, and creative nonfiction. While there are certain key recognizable features of each genre, these are not so much rules as they are tools, or conventions, the author uses. For example: Poetry: Ballads, Lyric, Epic, Dramatic, Narrative. Drama: Tragedy, Comedy, History, Melodrama, Musical. Prose: Fiction (Novel, Novella, Short Story), Nonfiction (Autobiography, Biography, Essay)
