Applying Ethical Principles
This paper describes how to apply ethical principles during an ethical dilemma utilizing an ethical decision-making model including applying moral awareness, moral judgment, and ethical behavior. Practicing nurses and other healthcare professionals face a wide range of complex ethical dilemmas. An ethical dilemma can be described as a situation or issue in which a complicated choice must be made amongst two courses of action, either of which entails transgressing a moral principle. Ethical dilemmas can happen to anyone in the healthcare field, and likely will. Some examples of ethical dilemmas include end of life care, bioethics, informed consent, patient privacy and confidentiality, immunizations, and lack of resources to perform daily tasks just to name a few. Healthcare professionals must apply an ethical decision-making model, ethical principles, and code of ethics when facing dilemmas to ensure the best outcome for all parties involved.
