In this extract, Dikens presents Scrooge's emotions to be sombre and serious.
This is skilfully illustrated in the opening of the extract when Scrooge
nervously asks Old Marley's ghost "tell me more?" This question teaches
readers that Scrooge is concerned and wants to know more about what is
happening to Marley, despite his cynical nature. This elicits a shock from both
a Victorian and modern reader was it implies that he cares, which is an
emotion his character has never before perpetrated. Dikens uses this
encounter to signify the beginning of Scrooge's transformation and the
experience he needs to become a practicing, Christian.
Further into the extract Dikens uses repetition to emphasise Scrooge's
overwhelmed and nervous state. He mentions, "Scrooge trembled more and
more", which implies that Scrooge is physically moved by Marley's warning
and insight inti the downside of the afterlife. This repetition teaches readers
that Scrooge is taking everything in and reflecting on his life. This further
builds on a modern readers shock as it activates the beginning of a change in
Scrooge's character. However, this would perhaps challenge a Victorian
reader, particularly wealthy Victorians, who had the means to help people in
need, yet did not for selfish reasons because it highlights the fate if anyone
who did not practice Christian characteristics as a whole.
Dickens reinforces the agitated state of scrooge when he is taught, “I cannot
rest, I cannot stay, I cannot linger anywhere”. This use of anaphora teaches
readers that Scrooge’s self-centred feeling will only lead him into an afterlife
which reflects Marleys, if he does not change. In turn both a Victoria and
modern feel pity for Scrooge as his attitude lead him to gaining a hrash and
frantic lesson. Dickens uses Scrooges reactions to teach readers of all eras a
moral lesson on the importance of morality and the impact it can have on their
life.
