Volunteering means conducting work without compensation (Dukker and Halman: 2003).According to Wilson 2000 as cited by Dunne and Owen, volunteering is defined as anyactivity in which time is given freely to benefit others outside of one's immediate family."Volunteering is a form of altruistic behavior. Its goal is to provide help to others, a group, anorganization, a cause, or the community at large, without expectation of material reward"(Marc and John 2007.P:3) In South Africa, as in other African countries, service and volunteering have always existed(Patel, 2007). Everatt and Solanki (2005) reported in their study on giving in the country that17% of South Africans volunteer. When people volunteer, they may be reifying the values of'Ubuntu' that "link the individual to the collective through brotherhood and sisterhood"(Swanson, 2007, p. 55). "Ubuntu"is a South African concept which is the recognition ofoneself through others and the fact that we need each other to survive and to exist ((Butcherand Einolf 2016). "Volunteering is therefore an integral part of moral obligations embodied in the systems ofmutual help and service in African societies, that are revealed in the cultural norms of caringand social responsibility" (Moleni & Gallagher, 2007, p. 41)
