ABC Book

Martin, B., Archambault, J., & Ehlert, L. (2012). Chicka chicka boom boom. Little Simon.

Plot: Each letter of the alphabet races to the top of the coconut tree, as each one gets to the top,

they begin to wonder if they will all fit. Before the last of the letters get to the top of the tree, it

bends and all the letters fall to the ground. Once on the ground, the parents of the letters come to

comfort and soothe the hurt letters before bedtime. While the letters sleep, the letter a sneaks off

to climb the coconut tree again.

Characters: The book contains the lower cases of the alphabet playing the role of mischievous

children climbing the coconut tree. The letters a, b, j, p, t and z are red; c, g, l, n, s and v are

purple; d, o and q are pink; e, i and x are orange; f and y are green; h, r and w are yellow; k, m

and u are blue. The upper case letters play the role of their concerned parents who rush to

comfort the lower case letters.

Illustrations: The illustrations are full-pages and take up both the left as well as the right pages.

The pages have boarders lining each page to make the images appear to be in a picture frame.

The colours used are very bright for the various images as well as for the letters. The letters are

also drawn to show injuries or emotions when they land on the ground with bandages, tears or

loose teeth. The letters are illustrated to mimic human movement as they are drawn to show them

holding and hugging each other.

Language: The book has three to four lines on each page for some while displaying less for

other pages. The sentences are meant to be read in a rhythm and are very simple for new readers.

Each page shows a maximum of two to three full sentences with short and simple words.

Introduction: Give the children rhythm instruments such as maracas and tambourines and ask

them to follow a rhythm after showing it to them. Once the children can follow the rhythm ask
