Explain your rationale for your choices. Provide any relevant literature to support your response. My DPI project is will involve providing awareness for people suffering from depression but are in denial or feel shame to seek help due to stigma. Some people may not even know if they are depressed or just “feeling under the weather” as some may think. It is important to educate people that early intervention in depression management leads to successful treatment outcome. Health promotion theories set out to improve the well-being and self-sufficiency of individuals, families, organizations, and communities by successfully changing their behaviors at multi- levels. They required a clear understanding of the targeted health behaviors, and the environmental context where the behaviors occur to successfully achieve desired outcomes. APRNs have a role in shaping public opinion and have many opportunities to improve population health through health promotion, education, and research (Cupp Curley, 2020). A health promotion theory I would use for my project will be the Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM). Pender’s model focuses on individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific conditions, and behavioral outcomes. It states that an individual has unique personal characteristics and experiences that affect his or her actions. She states that direct and indirect effects have some influence on health promoting behaviors. Her model states that biological, psychological, and socio-cultural are the personal factors of HPM. Biological factors include a person age, gender, body mas index, strength, balance, etc. psychological factors include a person self-esteem, definition of health, self-motivation, and competence of perceived health. While socio-cultural includes race, ethnicity, acculturation, education, and socioeconomic status. 1. The model has four assumptions that include: Individuals seek to actively regulate their own behavior. 2. Individuals, in all their biopsychosocial complexity, interact with the environment, progressively transforming the environment as well as being transformed over time. 3. Health professionals, such as nurses, constitute a part of the interpersonal environment, which exerts influence on people through their life span. 4. Self-initiated reconfiguration of the person-environment interactive patterns is essential to changing behavior (Nursing Theory, 2016). This model will be the best fit for my program because it will evaluate patients personal, psychological, and social factors. Using a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluating patients understanding of the depression pre and post intervention and evaluating the outcome of the intervention. Provide any relevant literature to support your response. A health related need that is currently present in my community in the city of Katy, Texas is the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Katy has higher income, most of their residence have health insurance and the community have a 6.79% poverty rate. The 5 largest ethnic groups in Katy, TX are White (Non-Hispanic) (63.5%), White (Hispanic) (20.1%), Black or African American (Non- Hispanic) (5.86%), Some Other Race (Hispanic) (4.55%), and Asian (Non-Hispanic) (2.65%) (Data USA, n.d). COVID-19 remains a major health need in this community as residents continue to take precautions to protect their families and communities. As the state of Texas struggle to control the virus, Katy remains one of many cities in the states of Texas battling COVID-19. As schools reopen in the community, 40% of parents in this community has decided to keep their children at home to protect them by selecting virtual school. There are some parents who still want their children to go to school in person. The spread of COVID-19 continues as parents continue to struggle with decisions to send their children back to school because of increase in children under age 18 testing positive. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 340,000 children have tested positive for the coronavirus, representing roughly 9% of U.S. cases to date (Turner, 2020). The community need to implement public health programs within residential areas within the community to provide awareness relating to prevention and testing within the community. Health care professionals need to launch a prevention program to assist schools within the community as they struggle with plans on how to protect children as they head back to school. Educational programs about hand hygiene, wearing mask when in close contact with others, and avoiding sharing needs to be emphasized to children as they head back to school. As an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), it is important to understand the community you live in so you can help improve the health of the community. Improving the health needs of the community you live in also help improve the economy of the community. Understanding a community’s culture is essential to program success. Th e APRN should expect this process to take time, patience, commitment, and persistence.
