1 Running head: JOURNAL WEEK 8 JOURNAL Chamberlain University PHIL347N: Critical Reasoning Critical Thinking o Go back to your very first j ournal entry – review your definition of critical thinking. After studying critical thinking for the past eight weeks, would you change your definition in any way? If yes, how and why? If no – if it was perfect – what parts of the text were best reflected in your definition? My definition about critical thinking has not changed. I still strongly believe that critical is one being able to use their knowledge to the best of their ability and apply them into real life. For example, a nurse has to have very good critical thinking skills and be able to apply them when taking care of their patients. Heart of the Matter • Recall in your first journal entry that you discussed the authors' statement that the concepts in Chapters 12, 13 and 14 were "the heart of the matter." After having studied those chapters, answer again, with renewed understanding, the question posed there: Why do you think the authors find these concepts important to critical thinking? The author finds these concepts important to critical thinking because these chapters enforce how human’s thing and their reasoning behind it. The concepts explained in these chapters forms our critical thinking. When two people disagree sometimes, we have to analyze and think about their point of view and reasoning behind it. Ethical Decision-Making o The lecture claims that an argument is no good unless it has a "strong and reasoned ethical base." Do you agree that ethics is an essential element of a good argument? If yes, why? If no, why not? Yes, I believe that ethics is a good essential element of an argument. Ethics is the study of the principles relating to write or wrong conduct. An argument is a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong. Putting these two definitions go great together in order to make a good argument. For example, cheating on a test we know that is wrongdoing and that should not be done that behavior is unaccepted. Looking Forward o Do you believe that you now know everything you need to know about critical thinking – or is learning to think critically a life-long task? Explain your answer. I believe that critical thinking is not something you can learn within just eight weeks, one year, or even five years. Critical thinking is a lifelong task because we are learning new doings every day. For example, nursing is all about critical thinking when we become nurses, we are learning something new every day within our scope of practice and it then become a lifelong task. Show Less
