Afforestation: Reducing carbon emissions (Carbon trading and international
agreements): (most effective)
 Within the UN’s Redd scheme in regards to afforestation,
countries who would have earned money from the cutting  Emissions are limited & price is put on them
down or burning of trees can now earn a living from  A cap is put on greenhouse gas emissions, as these gases are
protecting it, through placing a monetary value on forest what is driving global warming & over time this cap gets
conservation = incentive for developing countries stricter
 By agreeing not to emit Greenhouse gases through  Companies can buy & sell carbon credits that let them emit a
deforestation, landowners can sell “carbon credits”, certain amount - many people argue that this is the best
allowing for the emission of 1 ton of CO2 carbon management strategy environmentally &
 Landowners can sell these “carbon credits” & the economically as trading gives companies a strong incentive to
landowners who don't use all their carbon credits can make save money by cutting emissions in the most cost-effective
a profit from selling credit on to people who use a lot of ways
carbon  International agreement - Paris Climate Agreement
 Profits in money make landowners more likely to agree to - This aimed to reduce CO2 emissions below 60% of that of
carbon credits, therefore reducing negative impacts on 2010 by 2050 & keep global warming below 2 degrees C
climate change - It has international cooperation from approx 195
 E.g. China has demonstrated how forests can help tackle countries, therefore as it is a large scale project it has the
carbon emissions potential to reverse long term changes
- The government developed policies implementing the - HOWEVER, this agreement is not legally binding - success
construction of major afforestation projects & carrying of reducing carbon emissions was limited as countries set
out tree-planting campaigns their own targets
- The coverage of planted forests in China has grown - Also, due to there being 195 countries involved this meant
