Nene (2022) denoted that culture is one aspect that changes over time. In agreement
with Nene, Varnum and Grossmann (2017:1) indicated that “environmental pressure,
which evokes shifts in psychology and thereby enable greater precision in predictions
of specific cultural changes based on changes in ecological conditions.” One can then
say that the ecological conditions in which we are living in allow an individual to change
or evolve.

Task 1: (45%)

A. The photograph above depicts a similar occurrence, in which African and
Western cultures are combined. What is your opinion on this kind of marriage?
Discuss and elaborate. (6)

Mixed marriages are becoming more common and accepted by cultures throughout
the world. Marriage can be difficult for any couple, but problems can be more intense
for couples in a mixed marriage. However, mixed marriages are working and are
working well for some people. Yes, there are disadvantages to mixed marriages, but
there also are many benefits. In todays modernized times and of a better word, the
above is called an interracial marriage, which is a marriage involving spouses who
belong to different races or racialized ethnicities. In the past, such marriages were
outlawed in almost all the parts of the world. And fast-forward all thanks to the evolution
of time whereby multi-racial marriages are allowed. On a personal level I believe this
marriages are very good, firstly because a people have the right to do what they feel
is right for themselves with no fear of what people will say, and secondly because it
has these benefits: One of the benefits of interracial marriages is that it increases the
opportunity for positive interracial encounters in the sense that intergroup friendship is
associated with decreased intergroup prejudice. The rise of interracial marriage is
proof that love triumphs everything. As long as you love someone, you will always
accept and support the person you love even if you both have different ethnicities.

It brings different people, cultures, diversity, languages together, and it can do away
with the perception of discrimination and seeing other people who look different than
you in a different way.

B. In your opinion, can a person belong to more than one culture, or are they
neglecting their original identity when adapting to a new culture? (6)

Culture is the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artefacts
that the members of society use to interact with their world and with one another.
Culture is the collective programming of the human mind that distinguishes the
members of one human group from those of another. Culture in this sense is a system
of collectively held values Culture is the deeper level of basic assumptions and beliefs
that are shared by members of an organization that operate unconsciously and define
in a basic ‘taken for granted’ fashion an organization's view of its self and its
environment. I defined Culture as a way of life of a specific group of people, including
various ways of behaving, belief systems, values, customs, clothing, artefacts, social
relationships, religion, symbols and codes and being cultural means to relate to system
of shared beliefs, customs, and social behaviour of that specific group you identify
with. Bi-cultural people, who identify with two cultures simultaneously, are particularly
vulnerable to this kind of rejection. A person can become bi-cultural by moving from
one country to another, or if they are born and raised in one country by parents who
came from elsewhere, and with that said, I am inclined to conclude that a person can
belong to more than one culture but don’t have a full grasp of their true culture and
one usually neglects his her own culture when interacting with other cultures. Is good
to interact with other cultures, but always remembering your roots; your culture is your
own identity and belonging.

C. Discuss a wedding ceremony that you have personally attended.

The marriage ceremony that I attended is “Umtshato” Umtshato is the Xhosa word for
marriage ceremony. The groom kick-start the marriage process by choosing their
future bride and making their marriage intentions known. Ukuthwalwa is the name of
that process. The second step is a discussion between a man and his parents or
relatives. They will discuss the choice of the man and know the clan name of the
woman. This step is important to ensure that a man does not marry from the same
