Understanding Anxiety Disorders
● Anxiety causes a lot of emotional distress
● People with anxiety may:
○ Interfere with the way they make choices in their life
○ May not be able to live free
○ They may avoid dating
○ They may avoid new people
○ They may avoid situations that may open new possibilities for them
○ They tend to live narrow lives

○ Here is a chart with the various types of anxiety disorders
■ Social Phobia
● The fear of being amongst people
■ Specific Phobia
● Fear of heights
● Fear of spiders
● Germophobia
● This is the most common disorder
● Since it is common, a lot of people do not get treated for it
■ Panic Disorder
■ Agoraphobia without panic
■ Generalized anxiety disorder

■ Obsessive-compulsive disorder
● This is a rare disorder
■ These are all the sub anxiety disorder with a larger category of anxiety
disorders
■ The charts show how likely it is for any individual to develop it
■ There is a lifetime risk
■ Prevalence is the percentage of people at any given time within the 12
month period of time to have it
○ Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
■ It is a distinct disorder from obsessive-compulsive disorder
■ An obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is marked by somebody
who is needing predictability control over their lives including everything
● It involves an order of things like how things are placed
■ People with OCD are sometimes gripped with ritualistic ideas
● If they do not do this, a catastrophic event will occur
● The rituals are usually tied with some catastrophic fears
○ It may involve counting and setting things in order
●
○ If you look at the model, you will also consider the biological and psychological
agents that are involved
○ Social part
■ These are the external things
○ You will look at all four (4) of them in order to understand how they all interact in
a particular way that will manifest the disorder
