ACTIVITY - Bandura's Bobo Doll Experiment

Describe the following from Bandura's original Bobo Doll Study:
A.Purpose: To see if children will imitate aggressive behavior they’ve seen by the
behavior of the adult, modeled by an adult and investigate the effect of observational
learning and reinforcement on behavior. ( Show that just by watching other people
influences our behavior.)imitate
B. Hypothesis: Children will imitate the aggressive behavior of the models, while non
aggressive models will have an inhibiting effect
C.Independent variable(s):. One of his independent variables was whether the adult was
aggressive ( an adult model being aggressive with the bobo doll) , violent toward the
Bobo doll, - for some kids the adults acted violently and for others they didn’t and for yet
other children there were no adults at all.
D.Dependent variable(s): Response of the children, the level of aggression displayed by
the child towards the Bobo doll
E.Groups: The experimental groups were exposed to aggressive models ( childrens
watching an adult hitting the doll) , while the other 24 children were exposed to
non-aggressive models.
F.Results (all the results):
- children in the non-aggressive group did tend to exhibit less aggression than
the control group
- Children that watched the aggressive model were more aggressive
- Boys were more physically aggressive
- Children are more likely to model their behavior after nurturant models vs
threatening models

G.Conclusions/Implications:
Aggression is a learnt behavior instead of being innate
Children are more likely to imitate behaviors modeled by adults.
Children observing an adult model utilizing violence are more likely to believe that this
type of behavior is normal. Children learn via observation and modeling
