ASSIGNMENT 2
, QUESTION 1
1.1 I will divide learners into their reading ability group in the following:
Mixed ability group
The main reason for using small group is to let learners learn from each other or share materials.
Same ability group
Some ability groups are important for daily guided reading in groups.
Reading in pairs
Pairing learners helps them work together and help each other.
Individual reading
Sometimes children need to work independently to show understanding and progress.
1.2 Socio-cultural approach
Children will learn to read and write if they have support and scaffolding from adults and their fellow
leaners or classmates.
1.3 The role of the teacher is to scaffold as a frame work for learners to build their own knowledge.
These teachers will use methods that take children from full adult support to peer support and
independent reading and writing as they believe that children are the active learners who build their
own knowledge and they will ensure that children read text at their ZPD level.
1.4.1
Read and tell stories with different settings and discuss the different settings, people, pictures
and words.
Engage children in a variety of speaking, singing and play-acting situations, introducing new
songs and rhymes.
Introduce new songs and rhymes to engage the learners in a variety of speaking, singing, and
play-acting.
1.4.2 Difficulty in retaining new information If the children begin with something they already know,
they will retain any other new information better, so we need to build on the familiar. Frames of
Reference serve a valuable purpose, because they enable us to take in a wide variety of information, and
process it based on our past experience and values. In fact, an individual's Frame of Reference promotes
life-stability and quicker decision making.
1.4.3 I would ensure that my classroom is a literate environment by having different types of age
appropriate reading materials available. One never knows what learners might really take a liking to. I
will switch books out seasonally; it will be more interesting for the learners to read new books
