her words, did the patient demonstrate decision-making capacity? Explain. (Minimum of 1 page including in-text citations and references in proper APA format) A patient needs to give a voluntary, competent and an informed consent. This shows that the patient is aware and understood everything that was involved in the surgery and the recovery. It shows that she was sure of her decision despite knowing that when she is taken off the ventilator, she is likely to die (Darr, 2011). In case the patient is a child, a parent should have advanced directives in place with the child as the power of attorney and the child should agree with the decision that the parent makes. In case a parent decides to remove the ventilator, the doctor or any other person should not oppose. The patient had already made her decision known to the doctor since it was not an emergency situation thus no opposition is to be made because it is assumed that the patient was of sound mind while making such a decision. The patient had also made a living will which makes the family or the loved ones not to have any legal opportunity to makes decisions against the decision the patient made and thus the document can only be interpreted by the doctor when the need arises. Therefore, in this case, the living will and the child’s power of attorney indicates that the patient made her decision with regard to her care known
