GROSS ANATOMY OF AXILLA
AXILLA aka cervico-axillary canal Neckm
Apex
• Pyramidal space at junction of
arm and thorax
• Inferior to shoulder
• Gateway to upper limb
• Provides passage for blood
vessels, nerves and lymphatics

GROSS ANATOMY OF AXILLA
BOUNDARIES
• Apex and base
• Four boundaries
Anterior, Lateral, Posterior, Medial
APEX
Blunt triangle bounded by three bones:
• Clavicle <> Anteriorly
• Scapula <> Posteriorly
• First rib <> Medially
From each bone, muscles extend inferiorly
to form 4 corresponding walls of axilla
BASE
• Formed by skin, s-c tissue and fascia
• Conforms to concavity of armpit

From each bone, muscles extend
inferiorly to form 4 walls corresponding
to the bony boundaries
BONY WALLS
Anterior: clavicle
Lateral: humerus
