Introduction

Health care within the United States has a misconception of being the best health care in

the world. Compared to other countries, the United States does not endorse a unified health care

system or coverage. Even if the Affordable Care Act is factored in, millions of Americans still

struggle to afford any type of health care services. In this essay, the United States Health Care

system will be compared to the system implemented in a more socialist country, Canada. While

comparing these two countries, the coverage, the gross domestic percentage and costs will be

analyzed and explained. It is important to note that many other factors that influence the costs of

health care and the patient outcomes will also be discussed throughout this paper.

companies and obtain their health insurance through their employer. With the passage of the

Affordable Care Act in 2010 by President Barack Obama, the ultimate goal was to decrease the

percentage of Americans who were uncovered by health insurance. When the act was signed into

law the percentage of uninsured Americans was 49.9 million people or 16.3% of Americans.

(U.S Census Bureau, 2011, pg. 22-23). The Act was effective with its goal of reducing the

percentage of uninsured citizens as seen in 2016 when the percentage dropped to 8.8% or 28.1

million people. Health Care coverage comes in the forms of Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, the

ACA and other private insurance companies. According to Wilensky & Teitelbaum (2020),

“55.5 million citizens are insured through Medicare, 49 million have access to Medicaid, 23.6

million are insured with CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), 9.1 million are covered

with the Affordable Care Act, and 4 million are covered with other agencies,” (pg. 52). This
