to complete the selected businesses overall aims and objectives. The report also
evaluates the likely costs and benefits to the business of using different methods of
training to meet the individual needs of its employees.
1.1 Introduction to Aldi
Aldi was first opened in Essen, Germany by Anna Albrecht in 1913 and the business
was taken over by her sons in 1948. Since then the business has expanded into
thousands of countries around the world, including 1600 in the United States. Aldi is
on track to become the third- largest grocery chain in the US by count in 2022. Also,
Aldi is an PLC which means that people can buy shares on the stock exchange
which increases their capital to be able to invest in new products and equipment for
the business to run more efficiently. Furthermore, Aldi is known for their low prices
as the majority of the groceries it carries are private label.
1.2 Difference between Training and Development
Training is a learning process in which employees get to develop a skill and is the
acquisition of skills, knowledge and competencies which is a result from teaching to
reach the job requirement for the business. Due to the fact that teaching is in a form
of formal training or in a less formal situation such as one to one training with a line
manager or mentor so this will allow for an new employee to help train their skills to
be ready for their new job by learning the essential knowledge within the job role in
order to carry out the tasks.
However, Development teaches staff how to be more productive and effective within
their work area which means that this is a process where an employee will be able to
grow, change, adapt and become more advanced in their skills and competencies
over a period amount of time so that the business can be a lot more efficient and
businesses focus long term as this prepares them for future challenges to overcome.
This is likely to follow after training where employees will be able to prepare
themselves for additional responsibilities when they have been promoted within their
job role.
