What is the priority action the nurse should take?
The priority action the nurse should take is to stay with the patient. The nurse shouldn’t
leave the patient at this time and if they needs anything, she can call for assistance. This patient
is having an anxiety attack and is very scared. If the nurse leaves the patient, they may feel
abandoned. Another priority action would be to remain calm. The quiet calm of the nurse can
assist with calming the patient. It is also important to reduce the stimuli of the environment and
make sure it’s a quiet place for the patient. This can minimize the risk of increased anxiety level.
Ultimately, we want to keep the patient safe along with the staff and family members that are
present. Increased anxiety at panic levels can cause the patient to become harmful to themselves
and others. Lastly, another priority would be assessing the need for medication or even seclusion
if no other interventions help the patient to reduce their anxiety level. It is a priority of the nurse
to keep the patient safe, so they do not cause harm to themselves or others around.

Additionally, answer these following questions completely, in full sentences.

• What are examples of therapeutic communication techniques that are appropriate to use
when communicating with an anxious client? What are examples of non-therapeutic
communication techniques?
Examples of therapeutic communication techniques include using clear and simple
statements and repetition, use low-pitched voice and speak slowly, listen to the themes in
communication, and reinforce reality if distortions occur. Examples of non-therapeutic
communications techniques include advising the patient what they need to do,
disagreeing with how the patient is feeling, agreeing with the patient, belittling feelings
expressed, and rejecting.

• Why is it important for the nurse to use therapeutic communication techniques when
interacting with a client who has anxiety? What are the consequences of not using
therapeutic communication techniques? How would this potentially affect the therapeutic
relationship?
