Divergent
Connection between the title and the book
The story takes place in a world hit by war. A group of people escaped and formed a society. They
live in a future version of Chicago surrounded by large walls. Everything outside these walls is com-
pletely destroyed. The society is divided into 5 factions: Candor the honest, Abnegation the selfless,
Dauntless the brave, Amity the peaceful and Erudite the intelligent. Every year all sixteen-year-olds
have to take a test to determine to which group they belong. The main character of the book, Be-
atrice Prior, also takes the test. But the results of her test are abnormal, because she is Divergent.
Which means she doesn't belong to one faction.
Page 20/21: “Beatrice, your results were inconclusive”, she says. “Typically, each stage of the simula-
tion eliminates one or more of the factions, but in your case, only two have been ruled out.”
Everyone aged 16 can decide for themselves in which faction they want to be, you don't have to
choose the faction that came out of your test. The day after the test the selection ceremony starts
and Beatrice chooses Dauntless. As they go to their part of the city, the pupils meet Four, one of the
leaders of Dauntless. Four is also Divergent, which you will discover later on in the book. The leaders
of the factions think that Divergents are dangerous for the society because they are different, so the
leaders are chasing Divergents.

Main characters
Beatrice is a person who is brave, kind and smart. On page 21/22 Tori, the person who tests Be-
atrice, explains why she belongs to the Dauntless, Abnegation and Erudite. A little further on in the
book you can see that she is very brave, because she jumped first and she stood up to four, although
no one ever had the courage to do so. She is also very clever, what you learn through the fear tests
in Dauntless. They face their fears in the form of simulations, but Tris cracks the system because she
knows that the simulations are not real.

Favourite character
My favourite character in the book is definitely Beatrice. She grew up in Abnegation and had a nice
childhood full of love. But she has never really felt comfortable in her faction. For a number of years
she has been fascinated by the people of Dauntless, especially because they are the opposite of
Abnegation. She was quite worried about the outcome of her personality test: on the one hand she
didn't want to leave her parents, but on the other hand she didn't want to stay in this faction. Even
though she is very confused when she turns out to be Divergent and then when her brother switches
to Erudite, she still chooses her own preference: Dauntless. Once she is there her being Divergent
becomes more important. Tris discovers a lot about the person she really is. She is not afraid to
defend herself when it comes to something she finds important, and even though she may
sometimes be insecure about what other people think of her, she prefers to do her own way.

Character development
Beatrice develops in a few ways: she develops her courage, her strength and her confidence. She
trains boxing, shooting and the other aspects you need for the test by Dauntless. Because in Daunt-
less you are constantly being tested and you have to earn points to stay above the red line on the
scoreboard until the last test. If you're under that line you have to live with the factionless living in
poverty. Beatrice wants to prove that she's good enough for Dauntless, because if the leaders of the
factions find out she's Divergent, they'll come after her. So, she's training hard to pass the tests.
