CREATING VALUE WITH WEBSITES.
INTRODUCTION  HISTORY

VANNEVAR BUSH  He created ‘the memex’

First computer: ways for storing information + retrieved

!!!! used to do other things than calculate

 Information association and retrieval
 Precursor to the idea of the web
 Memex

Early 1960s

Military research: a lot of IT was invented by this

PAUL BARAN

 Surviving nuclear attacks
 Technology of the internet
 Packet switching= a way to transport info across the network

!! not the same ass circuit switching (=same circuit)

“Maybe we need a technology that allow us to survive even if one of those lines would be
destroyed”  packet switching

1

,You will split the information up in packets (=not a big thing)

Every note will be ‘smart’: it will be able to
make a decision to where go next

How? Based on:

1. How crowded are the lines
2. How long will it take
3. …

September 2, 1969

BIRTH OF ARPANET

= Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

Het ARPANET was het eerste operationele packet switching computernetwerk, de voorloper
van het internet, opgezet in de late jaren zestig door het Advanced Research Projects Agency
van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie

 Distributed network communication
 Precursor to the internet
 Backbone of all we take for granted now (e-mail, social media, websites, …)
 First connection between UCLA and IMP

August 12, 1981

FIRST PC

 created by IBM (this was the first commercial success)

 Color or mono-chrome
 $1500 (about 4000 now)
 Good worldwide reception
 IBM 5150

March, 1989

CERN = Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire

 Tim Berners Lee
 WWW
 First browser, first server
 NeXt
 Created HTML, URI, HTTP

2

, o URL: the address of the webpage
 Uniform resource location
o HTTP: protocol that is used to communicate between web clients and
webservers
 Hypertext transfer protocol
o HTML: Hypertext markup language
 Hypertext  more than text
 Markup language  gives extra information about the text

 Proposal was vague but exciting

13 October 1994

MARC ANDREESEN

 Netscape Navigator
 First advanced browser
 Precursor to IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, …
 Dominant market share in mid 1990s

-----------------------------------------

July 5, 1994

AMAZON

 Jeff Bezos
 First books, now everything
 Cadabra  ‘cadaver’= dead body: so they had to change the
name  Amazon
 $427 billion market cap

September 4, 1998

GOOGLE

 Google
 Larry Page
 Sergei Brin
 First search, now everything
