The Gut
Microbiota
and IBD
By Phoebe greening
, What is IBD?
• IBD stands for Inflammatory bowel
disease, an autoimmune disease that
causes inflammation in the
gastrointestinal tract, an abnormal gut
microbial composition and systemic
biochemical abnormalities. There are two
main forms of IBD, Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
and Crohns disease (CD). The major
difference between each is the location
within the bowel. UC tracks its way from
the anus up the bowel, and it mainly
located at the end of the large intestine.
However, CD can be located anywhere
within the gastrointestinal tract.
• According to IBDRelief, 2020 there is an
estimated 400’000 people in the UK
diagnosed with IBD.
