The document answers these questions for the CHEM 1111 Workshop class (co-requisite to CHEM 1311 at UTD). 1. Draw Lewis structures for the polyatomic ion “hydrogen carbonate” (bicarbonate) and acetic acid. 2. Considering that an acid-base neutralization reaction can be thought of as a “proton transfer reaction” wherein the acid is the proton donor and the base is the proton acceptor, which proton in your Lewis structures above is transferred. (2 points) 3. Write a balanced molecular equation that describes the reaction of an aqueous solution of acetic acid with solid sodium bicarbonate (include physical states!) (2 points) 4. Carbonic acid, H2CO3, is unstable and spontaneously degrades to give H2O (l) and CO2 (g). Rewrite your balanced equation from question 3 to reflect these products. 5. A long question about using the gas law to solve a stoichiometry problem. 6. Given access to water, how might you be able to determine the volume of an empty container?
