Dear Sir/Madam,
As a second year medical student at Leiden University, I recently came across the internship
programme through an assignment. I have great interest in the internship and would therefore like
to apply for the program. I am confident that I would be a great addition to your team in Uganda. I
was fascinated by your project since I want to learn a lot more about the international development,
public and global health, and especially the medicine in this country. I would love to promote healthy
lifestyles for the individuals in this area. This internship could not only expand my view on the
medical world, but could also teach me a lot about the culture which is beneficial for my future
career.
The cross-cultural collaboration and team building mentioned on the website appeals to me the
most. I have travelled for a year as a backpacker through Asia and visited many local villages.
Moreover, I have travelled repeatedly throughout my childhood. This has given me different
perspectives on the world and the way we live in it due to the multiple cultures I have seen. Seeing
the different cultures has given me a lot of local knowledge and I would like to enlarge this
knowledge with the internship. Further on, I have great experience with volunteering since I have
volunteered at local schools in the Netherlands and did a volunteer program during summer in South
Africa three years ago. Therefore I am highly comfortable with English, but I am always interested in
improving my skills. This program gives me the opportunity to expand my English in the community,
as well as in the English medical jargon.
Furthermore, I have developed myself the past few years due to the extracurricular activities I am
part of. I have evolved in my social techniques and accomplished many qualities I did not have before
like self-reflection, proper feed-back and taking a step back when this is necessary. My greatest
characteristics are caring, eager to learn and positive attitude. This can be of use in the programme
since I can quickly make individuals feel at ease. Moreover, the programme offers the ability to learn
new medical skills. These can be learned to me easily because I can become a master in the skill
quickly. Additionally, I like to keep myself busy and I am thus a good planner. Due to the busy
schedule I have, I have a great ability to adapt to new situations and changes in my surroundings.
