Teaching IELTS Assignment

Analyse the information in the class summary. What are your learners’ strengths and weaknesses?
(max. 100 words)
On a class level, their biggest strength is in reading, where many students have a band 7 grade; however, their listening,
writing and speaking are all averaged below a band 6 grade, with writing being slightly higher with an average score of 5.8
band grade, while listening and speaking both averaging 5.75 band grade.

Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? (minimum 150 words)
I have chosen to teach speaking and listening skills in this lesson. After analyzing the class summary, it seems these are
the two areas in need of improvement the most, for most of the students. The class averaged at 5.75 band grade for both
skills, lower than both their speaking and reading average scores. The IELTS final grade is weighted on the four different
skills and so, in order for the students to achieve a higher overall band grade, it is important to practice the areas they are
weaker in. Furthermore, these two skills are vital for good communication, and to have productive discussions in all topics,
students need to be able to express ideas clearly, concisely, and confidently. In addition, it is unusual to teach a whole
lesson in speaking alone, unless it’s near to a test day, which this class is not, so to combine it with listening skills should
make for an effective and efficient topic-based lesson.

As an immigrant myself, based on my personal experience when first arriving in the United States and starting high school,
listening and speaking were my weaknesses as well, yet both of these skills are so important for studying and working.
Therefore, I have chosen to teach speaking and listening skills in this lesson.

Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? (minimum 100 words)

I have chosen health and fitness as the topic for this lesson rather than work, education, and the environment because I
believe that almost everyone has some interest, opinions and knowledge in this subject. Furthermore, health, in particular
ill-health, is something we all have to deal with at some point in our lives, so having the necessary skills to discuss health is
important. It can be daunting to speak to a healthcare professional even in our native language, so it is important to
empower students to be able to talk about health in English too. Additionally, due to the current ongoing pandemic, health
and fitness has been a high-trending topic, with a great deal of information, both factual and nonsense, being shared online
and in the media. It is important to give students the vocabulary and knowledge to talk about this, so they can discuss ideas
and opinions, and help to dissect and understand facts. Furthermore, Ana, who has specified that she wishes to become a
nurse in the UK, making the subject of health even more relevant.
