NR500 Week 4 Discussion Topic, Leadership – Establishing Relationships and Influencing Change (Two Versions)
This week's focus is on developing foundational interpersonal skills that will prepare you for professional practice as a leader and change agent. As a leader, how will you influence change in your professional specialty area? Identify two strengths you have that will promote strong leadership. Identify two areas of improvement to your skill in leading and influencing change. What are two priority strategies you will implement to improve and/or enhance your leadership skills? The National League for Nursing (2010) states that master's-prepared nurses function as leaders and change agents and demonstrate leadership that promotes positive changes in their profession. This can be done in many ways, and it needs commitment, patient, knowledge, honesty and an open mind able to find ways to do the right or convenient thing to be able to be a great leader. As Florence Nightingale stated “Let whoever is in charge to keep this simple question in her head (not how can I always do this right thing myself, but) how can I provide for this right thing be always done). Last week I was send to take the class “Building a great Charge Nurse” where they explained to us that is about team work and be able to support the group, but consistent with the delivery of safe care to the patients. The two strengths are first being able to express a positive nonverbal communication, and secondly being a team player. Expression of positive nonverbal communication, have a eye contact when I’m communicating nonverbally, also gestures, smiling, and having a happy face even though the day is going like hell; my coworkers usually tell me, they love to come to me when their day going crazy, because just with my smile and a hug, I make their day better and that is a support for them. Enhanced communication skills are used to develop inter-professional relationships and patient and community partnerships, as well as to disseminate scholarly information (Cotterill-Walker, 2012). As team player, I like to help them during the shift, as well it help to prevent errors from occurring and to reach the tasks done by providing optimal healthcare.
