Introduction
This essay discusses the problems and benefits of globalisation in term of gastronomic and
culturally. Therefore, the author of this essay will present arguments about globalisation
progressed and how it affected the lifestyle of the earth population.
Hassi & Storti (2012) defined globalisation as a process which the world is becoming more
interconnected by trading with other countries and subsequently resulting in cultural
exchange as well.
One definition of globalisation in the gastronomic side the knowledge about food imported
and to have access for this seasonal food at any time of the year.
Main body
The globalisation phenomenon, described by Levin Institute (2019) influenced negatively for
developing countries as they belief on lost for their native heritage cultural tradition. Most of
developing countries starting imitating American lifestyle influenced by Tv shows,
magazines and pop-music abroad. Comparison with Ritzer (1996), who reveals the
globalization as a modern way of doing business which seems practical and quick with
advantage of only few skills for employees on prepare and deliver a product such as a
McDonald’s hamburger. In order to identify if globalisation is beneficial or disadvantageous
for people it would be necessary to understand how the life of those people was before being
threatening from the globalisation phenomenon. The Levin Institute (2019) reported evidence
of globalisation improving human condition and giving basic human rights for the developing
countries. For example, for many countries in the past, women were not allowed the right of
going to school education and employment. The point of super-speed McDonald’s product
described by Ritzer (1996), is valuable in the contest of modern lifestyle which seems
nowadays not time for cooking anymore and everything must have to be made and consume
in a quick time. Unfortunately, this type of lifestyle brought many problems as the
standardizing for the mass production of the product at McDonald’s reported by the
Independent (2019), affected unfairly chickens on fast-growing reflecting badly to their well-
being. The argument is convincing as the globalisation movement is inducing to worldwide
homogenisation where McDonald’s restaurants are advancing on establishing it in more
countries abroad. An example of homogenisation state by The Levin Instituted (2019) abroad
are the McDonald’s chains available in countries such as Brazil, Australia, Europe, South
Africa, and Japan. Where either tourists and locals have the availability of a homogenized
hamburger. However, Mark (2011) outlines, that the introductory of homogenisation can
reveal diversity between globalisation to localisation. The interactions between globalisation
and localisation can in fact results in heterogenization. Mark (2011) observe heterogenization
as result of pride for the locals, called then localisation. One example of heterogenization in
Hong Kong, is a new style of English tea made by the locals where instead of pouring the
milk they vaporised it on. Another drink example made from the same city is called “yuan-
yang” which Caffe and Tea are mixed together.
