Barcelona city and the Visitor Economy Challenges..............................................................................3
Introduction...........................................................................................................................................3
This report will critical evaluate issues related to the visitor economy for the city of Barcelona. The
critical issues for this report that challenge Barcelona city’s visitor economy are mass tourism,
citizens’ rights, and gender equality. Therefore, these issues will critically debate and evaluated
through the body of this report. Barcelona represents a type of tourism called “urban tourism”,
which attracts numerous tourists throughout the years. It is considered as a short break for tourist
easily to reach for a weekend away. Urban tourism means that the destination is the city. To attract
tourists, the tourism industry, with the main stakeholders, invest much money for the capital centre
in building facilities to please tourists and create events. Therefore, attractions such as casino,
museums or events like concerts or football league are typical examples to motivate tourists to visit

Another challenger for the visitor economy is gender inequality. Cole (2018) reported that gender
equality matters because it would double the economic income if women’s and girls’ would be
empowered to participate in the labour forces. Various studies reported the disparity of equality
gender a global scale which many institutions and governmental organisation believe in reducing this
gap by implementing strategies and programmes to facilitate women’s empowerment. Therefore,
the tourism sector realised the gap in gender equality, which constrain the progress for sustainable
tourism. Thus, such inequality should be addressed for given the right balance level with countries
that do not make such disparity between genders. Although Spain reported as being classified at the

8th place stated by Spain, it has the highest percentages of female managers in companies, 2020) in
gender equality vs the UK, which is at the 21 places, Barcelona still having issues in the correlation of
gender equality. For example, in the technology sector, women have less power in decision making
reported by the Barcelona Digital City-Putting Technology at the service of People-2015-2019 (n d.).
.............................................................................................................................................................11
Such progress developed by the intervention of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for
Development organised during 2017, where the World Tourism Organisation discussed with the
Organisation Equality in Tourism strategies to address women empowerment to reduce labour
gender inequality. Unfortunately, not all sectors have applied the gender equality policies as the
above statement, which incurred the technology sector leaving behind women in decision power
about technology software installed in Barcelona (Cole, 2018)...........................................................13
5.1 Superblock for gender equality and safety in public spaces..........................................................13
The implementation of CCTV camera is a safety reason for the women and children also because
many episodes reported about male tourists who taken advantages of women in Barcelona city.
Women and girls reported various accidents of tourists having the attitude of molesting girls in
Barcelona city. Paola Vizcaino-Suarez et al, (2020) reported on her research many issues in the
correlation of tourists behaving like “post-male Chauvinism”, making at-risk women safe. This
phenomenon is the reflection of political divergence between the host country to the guest
destination. In the UK, many rapes reported by women are often not classified as abuse by the
police, who does not consider registering such episodes. The number of rapes are in the UK are.
Therefore, some men going abroad will continue doing the same behaviour, thinking that manners
are acceptable everywhere they go. Although, such behaviour is not acceptable by the Spanish
constitution, where citizens developed an association called the Citizen Platform for Real Equality,
which conveys a woman right to report sexual or sexist crimes for tourists while they stay..............14
