• Multicultural education is an approach designed to change the environment so that different kinds of groups, including ethnic groups, women and learners with special needs, experience educational equality and academic parity. Example: South Africa’s education system aspires to be multicultural and has achieved this to a certain extent in some schools, especially those in big urban centres. • Prejudice is defined as a judgement or opinion against or in favour of a person or thing formed beforehand or without due examination of the facts. Example: You dislike some people because they don’t share your religion. • Xenophobia • Racism is the belief that one’s own race is superior to another. This belief is based on the false premise that physical attributes of a racial group determine intellectual characteristics as well as social behaviour. Example Only white people can be scientists • Prejudice reduction is a deliberate attempt by a teacher to foster positive attitudes towards other races, ethnic groups and social classes. It encompasses overcoming bias and building a positive attitude in the learners. Children acquire bias at a young age from siblings and parents and bring it to school. There are various strategies to promote prejudice reduction and these entail deliberately seeking out and overcoming bias and then building a positive attitude towards different social groups. • An empowering school culture is the creation of conditions within the school in which all the diverse learners experience equality. It may include a total overhaul of the school environment, policies and practices, and the participation of all the members of staff. ................continued
