1.1
A whole classroom discussion is where teachers and students give their input
on a specific topic been thought in class. Students give their input and others
contribute to that. Everyone shares ideas and takes down notes on the topic. I
have experienced many class discussions in school both successful and
unsuccessful.
An example of a successful class discussion I've experienced: I was in grade 10
and it was a business studies period. The topic was about small and large
businesses. The teacher introduced us to the topic and gave us an
understanding of what was small and large businesses and asked us questions
on it. Everyone in the class had their idea of a small and large business and
what trade was the business doing ect. Everyone contributed to the lesson. It
was easy because she explained the topic to us before. The teacher was also
very strict so nobody spoke about other things during the discussion. The
discussion was very successful because it helped me answer the activities for
the topic. Everyone had notes for the class discussion and we stuck it in our
books.
An example of a unsuccessful class discussion I've experienced :
It was a lo period and the class was put into groups to discuss different topics.
The teacher didn’t explain much to us and Instructed us to read the textbook
and get an understanding of our topic. she left us unattended to
No one was talking about life orientation. Students were leaving the class to
take a walk, some were doing work for other subjects and during the period
two boys got into a fight and some furniture broke. The period was a waste of
time. We lost a period where we could have done work and learnt L.O. the
next few L.O lessons was a rush because the teacher was pushing syllabus due
to us losing a period.
