A theory is formulated by concepts, interpretations, models, proposition as well as assumptions. These theories are then derived from deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning. To take a nursing theory and apply it to patient care means that we are using these models to assess the patient condition, needs, goals, the use of effective communication, as well as being able to problem solve and evaluate which theory will be the most fruitful for the patient. There are several reasons to apply nursing theories in practice. One purpose is to be able to guide nurses and be able to describe and have a virtual mental templet about everyday experiences.
