Lifelong learning can enhance our understanding of the world and it’s
environment that we get to deal with every day. It can provide us with
better opportunities and improve the overall quality of our daily lives.
The two main reasons for lifelong learning are as follows: for personal
development and for professional development.
On a personal level it can help us learn new life skills that will come in
handy when teenagers reach adulthood. On a professional level it can
help us learn skills that will be needed in the work environment when we
have to start working.
Education can help learners discover the symptoms and the real
causes of environmental problems.
It can help learners engage in problem solving by taking actions to
improve the environment that they are in. As a result, learners will develop
a deeper understanding of the environmental issues that they have to face
day-to-day, and they will be able to make more responsible decisions.
It encourages learners to use energy and water more responsibly by
recycling water and turning off electrical opponents when they are not in
use.

of humans, that impacts the world every day. Humankind has altered the earth
on a massive geological scale. The key impactors are growth of population,
economic growth, pollution, war, and degradation. The Anthropocene includes
several global environmental crises such as alien invasive species, extinction of

certain species, degradation of the environment, water and air pollution, health
hazards, climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Key global environmental issues and challenges that have emerged in this
era:
There are various environmental issues that have emerged in this era. Firstly, all
kinds of pollutions. Air pollution – the pollution of our most valuable resource,
because it lets us breathe. The air gets polluted by exhaust fumes of cars,
industrial waste gasses, and many other types of gasses released into the
atmosphere. CFCs have caused climate change globally.
Water pollution – another one of our most valuable resources, as we need it to
stay alive. The quality of our water is an important factor of our lives. Drinking
water that has been contaminated by toxic waste can have really bad long0term
side effects such as cancer.
Land pollution – Humans seize to find the correct method of getting rid of solid
waste and because of this inability to find the right solution, land pollution has
gotten out of hand in some parts of the world.
Secondly, loss of biodiversity.
Humans destroy habitats, including forests and swamps, which lead to extinction
of various kinds of micro-organisms and some animals which are important for
the healthy sustainability of the food chain. Poaching of endangered species has
also become a huge problem in some parts of the world, including South Africa.
Rhinos are killed for their horns. White rhinos have now been poached to the
brink of extinction and black rhino’s population have decreased by 90%.
Thirdly, food insecurity. Food insecurity if one of the biggest global factors that
affect people negatively. Over one billion people get affected by food insecurity
on a daily basis. Because rainfall is affected by climate change, crops do not
receive the amount of water that they need to fully grow, and the food becomes
less and less. The increasing population also does not help the food insecurity,
because more and more people need food while the food becomes less and less.
People now turn to artificial foods that cause them to become diabetic and
overweight.
Lastly, poverty. Poverty is measured according to each individual per capita
household expenditure. It refers to the lack of resources that are needed to
survive. It also refers to deprivation of socio-economic rights of individuals
because they do not have the money to pay for such resources. There is a major
inequality between the rich and the poor.
