Experiment 3 – Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis TITLE: Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis
PURPOSE: To measure the quantity of a substance present in a chemical compound and to determine the identity of chemical substances.
OBSERVATION & RESULTS: First Section:
Quantitative Analysis – Measure quantity of a substance present in a chemical compound Analyze Metal Carbonate - weight a known amount in beaker
Put an excess of sulfuric acid in
React the sulfuric acid with the carbonate – carbonate will lose certain amount of its weight as
CO2. We will be able to tell how much CO2 was lost and figure out how many moles was
lost Figure out how many moles the metal was and that will help us figure out what that metal
was
1.1809g metal carbonate
Add sulfuric acid
New weight -.7033 /mass loss of 0.7033
44.01 is molecular weight of CO2 Hydrate (unknown) 2.4406g of metal hydrate
cruciable with unknown hydrate in it – add burner (~10 minutes) – hydrate will lose its water
put it in decicater to allow it to cool – has material on the bottom to prevent any water from
being picked up
allow to cool for 10 mins – new weight/mass loss = .3748
Molecular weight of H2O times the prefix number
