Sportguard
Steps
Medical/dental history review (instructor)

Trimmed model for mouth guard (instructor)

Retentive & adapts well to palate
Muscle attachments & frenums relieved
Surface area (including periphery) smooth
Even thickness (no extension onto hard palate)
Home care instruction
Wash the guard with room temperature water & liquid soap on a
toothbrush after each use
Do not soak the guard in a commercial denture cleaner or alcohol
containing mouthwash (will degrade guard material over time)
Allow the guard to AIR dry (do not enclose in an air tight container,
because it will grow mold and bacteria)
Use a perforated container for storing
Do not leave the guard where it's exposed to extreme heat (car, hot
water - will wrap)
Do not chew on guard (will tear or distort)

, Replace the guard when it no longer fits well or has tears & holes in it

Steps

Gypsum casts are produced & trimmed (instructor)
Block-out resin is applied & cured to facial surfaces of teeth to be
whitened
Resin tray is constructed & trimmed to specification
Client is instructed regarding the use of tray to apply whitening agent
Opalescence procedure
Follow instructions on how to load gel into custom bleaching tray - use
no more than 1/3 to 1/2 syringe
Have client brush teeth before inserting tray
Show client how to load tray by expressing one continuous bead of gel
approximately half-way up (or slightly lower) from the incisal edge on
the facial side of the tray from molar to molar
Lightly tap tray to adapt tray to sides of teeth
Remove excess gel with clean finger or soft toothbrush
Week 10 - Complete Dentures 2
, Rinse twice, do not swallow rinsed gel
Wear Opalescene 10% for 810 hrs or overnight. Opalescence 15% for
46 hr, 20% for 24 hr, 35% for 30 min
If significant sensitivity occurs, stop treatment + consult dentist/dental
hygiene treatment
Instruct client to clean tray wit soft brush & cool tap water after each
use. Store tray in case provided
Note: Load the syringes, put in the buccal surface of the teeth that are
gonna be whitened
Side notes
Stopping use for multiple nights does not jeopardize continued
bleaching when reinitiated
With sensitivity/gingival irritation - 1st treatment of choice is application
of UltraEZ (maybe worn in Opalescence bleaching tray from 12 hr
overnight as needed); can also use anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen,
aspirin)
Standard to evaluate clients every 35 days of treatment; number of
days required to complete treatment depends on the types of stains
present or their severity
Inform clients that existing crowns, tooth coloured fillings, etc. do not
whiten, even though natural teeth potentially will
