Muscle attachments & frenums relieved

Surface area (including periphery) smooth

Even thickness (no extension onto hard palate)

Home care instruction

Wash the guard with room temperature water & liquid soap on a
toothbrush after each use

Do not soak the guard in a commercial denture cleaner or alcohol
containing mouthwash (will degrade guard material over time)

Allow the guard to AIR dry (do not enclose in an air tight container,
because it will grow mold and bacteria)

Use a perforated container for storing

Do not leave the guard where it's exposed to extreme heat (car, hot
water - will wrap)

Do not chew on guard (will tear or distort)

Whitening trays
Steps

Medical/dental history review (instructor)

Informed consent by client (peer)

Pre-treatment intraoral examination complete (peer)

Full-arch alginate impression taken (instructor)

Gypsum casts are produced & trimmed (instructor)

Block-out resin is applied & cured to facial surfaces of teeth to be
whitened

Resin tray is constructed & trimmed to specification

Client is instructed regarding the use of tray to apply whitening agent

Opalescence procedure

 Follow instructions on how to load gel into custom bleaching tray - use
no more than 1/3 to 1/2 syringe

 Have client brush teeth before inserting tray

 Show client how to load tray by expressing one continuous bead of gel
approximately half-way up (or slightly lower) from the incisal edge on
the facial side of the tray from molar to molar

 Lightly tap tray to adapt tray to sides of teeth

 Remove excess gel with clean finger or soft toothbrush

Week 10 - Complete Dentures 2

,  Rinse twice, do not swallow rinsed gel

 Wear Opalescene 10% for 810 hrs or overnight. Opalescence 15% for
46 hr, 20% for 24 hr, 35% for 30 min

 If significant sensitivity occurs, stop treatment + consult dentist/dental
hygiene treatment

 Instruct client to clean tray wit soft brush & cool tap water after each
use. Store tray in case provided

Note: Load the syringes, put in the buccal surface of the teeth that are
gonna be whitened

Side notes

Stopping use for multiple nights does not jeopardize continued
bleaching when reinitiated

With sensitivity/gingival irritation - 1st treatment of choice is application
of UltraEZ (maybe worn in Opalescence bleaching tray from 12 hr
overnight as needed); can also use anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen,
aspirin)

Standard to evaluate clients every 35 days of treatment; number of
days required to complete treatment depends on the types of stains
present or their severity

Inform clients that existing crowns, tooth coloured fillings, etc. do not
whiten, even though natural teeth potentially will
