C918 – Evolving Roles of Nurse Educators in Diverse Learning Environments

,1

, Taking a Position

For this reflection, I advocated for the American Nurses Association (ANA) position
statement regarding Workplace Violence and Incivility. This ongoing issue affects nurses in all
settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home health. This issue affects the nursing field by
impacting retention, safety, and quality of patient care. It is professionally imperative to create a
safe and respectful working environment. When applying Kingdon’s Multiple Streams
Approach, it frames how crucial it is to develop and implement reforms. The problem stream is
evident by the increasing incidence of violence against nurses. This increased burnout and staff
turnover, which is directly linked to unsafe work environments. The policy stream involves
evidence-based strategies already in place, such as interprofessional education, reporting
systems, and zero tolerance. Lastly, the political stream aligns with increasing public awareness
regarding the safety risks healthcare workers face daily. This was recognized mainly during the
COVID-19 pandemic due to the increased support of essential workers.

When the three streams intersect, a “policy window” emerges to propose meaningful
legislation. Nurse educators and frontline workers must partner with policymakers and
interprofessional colleagues to advocate for safety mandates within the hospital. These safety
mandates may include prevention programs and staff training. However, the interventions must
be consistently enforced. Harm to nurses and healthcare workers should be enough to require
intervention. However, using the facts that this issue also affects patient safety and care quality,
we can use it as leverage in influencing policy. Advocacy, timing, and evidence are all factors
that influence change, as demonstrated by the use of Kingdon’s model. These factors can drive
policy reform and protect nurses and healthcare workers from violence.

Final Course Reflection: Nurse Educator Roles
Upon reflecting on this course, I learned a variety of things, as well as things I was
continuing to build upon. I learned much about the multidimensional role of a nurse, but not the
specifics of a nurse educator. From observing previous instructors, I have learned that a nurse
educator is responsible for much more than just teaching in a classroom. I understood that the
responsibilities of a nurse educator included mentoring and curriculum development. I have
furthered my perspective by learning about the multidimensional and tripartite roles, which
include teaching, scholarship, and service. Nurse educators are not only responsible for teaching,
but they also play a role in active participation in research, peer review, publications, and policy
advocacy to advance the profession. Many expectations of an academic nurse educator (ANE)
require balance.
I believe my view of academic integrity has continually evolved. When I was first in
nursing school, there were already many ways that could impact the integrity of a student due to
the advances of technology. However, I was not aware of the perspective of an instructor on this
topic. With the continued advancements of artificial intelligence (AI), it provides students with
the opportunity for compromised academic integrity. While AI can be helpful, we must
