Inspiration of Gothic Writers
The 18th-century era might have produced some of the greatest writers of all time. Since
reading was and still is one of the common habits for most people, they often need to be
entertained through literal works from different authors. Gothic writing was one of the common
literal forms during the time. It involved a darker perspective of society as a whole (“Similar
Gothic Elements”). The amazing thing is that some of these works are still in existence and the
chances of them fading away any time soon is null. Some of the greatest writers of the era
included Washington Irving and Poe. There is always an inspiration behind every successful
deed accomplished, and these writers had that in common.
Irving is well known for his work through the countless books he wrote at the time,
including Sleepy Hollow. His passion for writing started at a young age (Ronald, et al., 996). “He
met the Scottish poet and novelist Sir Walter Scott, who directed him to unused literary material
in German folktales. There, Irving found sources for tales such as “The Legend of Sleepy
Hollow.” (Ronald, et al., 997). A dark past might have been one of the compelling factors. The
inclination towards writing gothic books might have been the death of his girlfriend. “Hoffman’s
daughter Matilda, to whom Irving was engaged, died suddenly from consumption” (Ronald, et
al., 997). Some of the gothic writers usually try to express their inner feelings through writing.
